Early in the fall of 2008, as a freshman at Duke University, I was given the chance to apply for a program entitled DukeEngage – relatively new at the college – which would allow me to visit any one of a number of developing regions across the world and engage in civil service for about eight weeks.
I applied for a program in Kakamega, Kenya which was run by the Foundation for Sustainable Development. I was lucky enough to be accepted into the amazing program. Duke would foot the entire bill associated with immersing into this totally new culture and engaging a developing community in a sustainable way.
Working through FSD, I was placed in the Iguhu District Hospital, where I am expected to conduct a thorough needs assessment and outline and implement a work plan for the next two months. I write this blog to document my experiences – cultural, professional, educational, and otherwise – during my stay in the country and initiatives even after I leave.
All pictures that appear on the blog are my own unless otherwise stated. I ask that if you use any of them, you credit the picture appropriately and provide a link to this blog.
Please feel free to send me any questions you have about this amazing experience!
